Bogotá, October 17, 2019 (FNC Press) - At a time when low international grain prices threaten the sustainability of coffee production in various countries, Colombia has to defend itself, the quality of coffee, said the General Manager of the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC), Roberto Vélez Vallejo.This value proposition in defense of the 540,000 Colombian coffee families came at the opening of the 2019 edition of Cafés de Colombia Expo, the most important specialty coffee fair in Latin America and the Caribbean, in Corferias. 
The union leader referred to the predictions of the prestigious expert in sustainable development Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who warned that many non-profitable coffee growers will tend to disappear.
Before which Vélez Vallejo recalled what he has raised before and in various scenarios: that it is with the quality for which Colombian coffee has long been committed that it can defend itself in the global market, against competitors that are withering. "Colombia has to defend itself, one soul, the quality of coffee, that is the key to Colombia's future," he said.
"We have to continue working so that Colombia is what it has been during all these years, the beacon of quality coffees in the world, competitors are withering ... at those price levels high quality coffees begin to stumble, but As long as Colombia has an institutional framework, the Federation of Coffee Growers will not let the coffee growers out of the world of coffee, they will not take us out and we will take over the world of high quality coffee because it belongs to us, "he added.

The General Manager also invited attendees to raise Colombia's internal coffee consumption, since the conditions are in place for everyone to be experts in the beverage. Como es tradición, y también uno de los aspectos más emocionantes de la feria, tendrán lugar el XIV Campeonato Colombiano de Baristas, el IX Campeonato Colombiano de Catadores y el II Campeonato Café X2, eventos que convocan a todo público y confirman la gran destreza, pasión e interés de los colombianos por un producto que nos hace mundialmente famosos.
Como una de las principales novedades de esta edición de la feria se llevará a cabo el primer Campeonato Colombiano de Tostadores, proceso que juega un papel indispensable en la calidad final de una taza de café.
